Is an unknown competing product more dangerous?

April 2nd, 2010 admin

Reading through posts on the Amazon Kindle forum and a very common sentiment is – Oh, so this is what the iPad is. I prefer my Kindle. These are not the extreme people (iPad haters or Kindle haters). Just people who were curious and wondering whether the iPad would be better for reading books than the Kindle. It reminds me of what happened with the Nook and even with the Kindle DX. Every…

What are existing eReader owners looking for?
In all the discussion of what casual readers would like, what people considering an eReader would like, and what people who love physical books want we tend to forget a very important group – People who already own an eReader . Shouldn’t the best customers be given the highest priority? Recurring Themes in eReader Owners’ Feedback...
Publishing and Books in 10 years
Publishing and Books in 10 years
It’s worth wondering where Publishing might be in 10 years. For this post we’re limiting ourselves to books – reading and publishing books. Publishing and Books in 10 years Will there be more readers? This might be the biggest judge of whether eReaders and eBooks are a good thing.   Will there be more people reading books...

People not interested in eReaders threaten to not buy eReaders
It’s always amusing to hear people who will never, ever buy an eReader tell eReader companies what they should be designing. It’s even more amusing when they threaten to not buy an eReader unless their requested changes are made. When eReader haters threaten to not buy eReaders A common theme since Day 1 of the rise of eReaders has...
Everyone is a Kindle, iPad expert
Everyone is a Kindle, iPad expert
People are still boldly making predictions about what impact the iPad will have on reading and books and Publishing. Thankfully, a few of those predictions don’t involve the complete and utter destruction of the Kindle and other eReaders. Kindle is going to survive camp We have a miracle – After weeks of hysteria we have people...

Good Reads in Recent Non-fiction for the Kindle (Part I)
What I like about non-fiction is that it covers such a huge territory. The best non-fiction is also creative. – Tracy Kidder. Is the growth of reading devices boosting ebook sales?
Is the growth of reading devices boosting ebook sales?
It’s amazing to see all the growth in reading devices in the last few months – Nook got a fancy new browser and features.  The iPad came out and lots of people are supposedly using it as their eReader. Kindle announced new features (arriving in May) and Kindle for PC got new features.  Lots of new eReaders were released.  Authors will...
Various Kindle related thoughts
Various Kindle related thoughts
Since there’s hardly any interesting Kindle news here are some thoughts – Kindle Store now has 480,000 titles.  At the Kindle vs Nook comparison page at B&N there are only 2 crosses (indicating missing features) under the Nook column and 17 crosses under the Kindle column. Don’t they want to pretend even a little bit that...
Kindle better for reading during the day, iPad at night may lead to loss of sleep
Kindle better for reading during the day, iPad at night may lead to loss of sleep
Let’s start with an interesting 2 person experiment that Jason Perlow at ZDNet carried out. It involved two people reading books and experiencing reading on both iPad and Kindle in various lighting conditions. They then note down their thoughts on whether the eInk screen of the Kindle really is better for reading than the iPad’s...
Kindle is competing with Tablets even though it isn’t
Kindle is competing with Tablets even though it isn’t
To fully understand this we need to start from when there were no eReaders. Before eReaders Publishers weren’t interested in creating or promoting ebooks – they didn’t know how much money there was, they had little interest in computers and electronics, they weren’t very interested in progress, they were concerned about...
Good old books, the iPad, and storytelling
Good old books, the iPad, and storytelling
Tim Carmody at SnarkMarket has a good post on why he thinks books on the iPad might work . He thinks that most people will buy the WiFi model of the iPad and since they won’t have the Internet all the time and don’t have enough room for a ton of movies they’ll end up trying out other things i.e. reading books. Here are the...
